Glasgow born centre half Robert Connelly joined Second Division club Port Vale from Shettleston in 1921 making his Football League debut that August at Leeds United. He was a one club stalwart who played 337 times for Vale over the next 11 seasons, scoring 18 goals, being ever present for two successive seasons from 1927 to 1929. In the latter season Port Vale were relegated but bounced straight back to the Second Division in 1929-30 with Connelly winning a Third Division (North) Championship medal. In 1932 he joined non league Congleton Town, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
