Description

Wolverhampton born full back Ted Collins started his football career with Bilston United in 1904 and played for Verity’s Athletic in 1905 and Brownhills Albion in 1906, before joining hometown professional club Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1907, for whom he made his Football League debut in the Second Division against local rivals West Bromwich Albion in September 1907, and in his first season he played 7 cup ties as Wolves won the FA Cup in April 1908 beating Newcastle United 3-1 at The Crystal Palace in front of 75,000 spectators. He made 307 appearances for Wolves through to the suspension of football in 1915 due to the onset of the First World War, without ever scoring, missing only 5 games in the final five seasons before the War, being an ever present during their 1912-13 campaign.

He joined Port Vale as a wartime guest in September 1916, and made his debut at right back in a 0-0 draw with Liverpool at the Athletic Ground in a Football League, Lancashire Regional Section match on 9th September. He became a regular in the first team, and left Port Vale in September 1917, and later played for Sunbeam Motors. He signed for Southern League Newport County on the resumption of peacetime football in 1919, but before they joined the new Football League Third Division (South) he returned to Black Country non league football with Hednesford Town in 1920 before his eventual retirement.

NB this image shows Collins with the English Cup, the previous version of the FA Cup.
