Signing professional at Highbury in April 1933, Sheffield born wing half had played for Oughtibridge Working Mens’ Club in 1932 before joining Arsenal, for whom he made his Football League debut in place of Wilf Copping in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1937. Collett helped the Gunners win the League Championship that season and The London Combination on six occasions. Making 187 wartime appearances and winning two wartime league winners medals in 1939-40 and 1941-42. In June 1940, he was one of five Arsenal players who guested for Southampton in a victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, he assisted Brentford in the 1942 War Cup final and played 21 first team games for Arsenal either side of the Second World War before joining the coaching staff in June 1949. He later became chief scout until retiring in November 1979 before his death in a traffic accident five months later.
