Tyldesley (near Wigan) born right back Joe Colebourne had played for Atherton and Tyldesley Celtic in Lancashire junior football prior to the First World War, however after the War he had joined Exeter City in May 1919, playing a season in The Southern League, and he made his Football League debut for Exeter in their inaugural Football League match against Brentford in August 1920, playing 31 times that season. However he signed for Swindon Town in June 1921 and spent 2 seasons in Wiltshire during which time he made 60 appearances for The Robins.

In August 1923 he returned to Exeter City, and had his busiest season to date for Exeter, playing 46 games (scoring 3 goals) including 7 FA Cup ties as Exeter went on a sizeable Cup campaign. From February 1924 he took over the right half berth, however he only featured 7 times in the opening half of the 1924-25 campaign and joined non league Taunton United in 1925 after 84 games for The Grecians over his two spells (ex Southern League).
