Sunderland born inside left joined South Shields after World War One making his debut against Tottenham Hotspur in September 1919. His three seasons on Tyneside saw him score 12 goals in 53 games and he was signed by West Ham United in the summer of 1922 going straight into the side and playing the first 8 games of the new season. However he didn’t settle in East London and having been dropped he was exchanged in January 1923 for Newport County’s Bill Edwards. His 2 and a half seasons at Newport produced 20 goals in 92 appearances, before he joined First Division Cardiff City. However he couldn’t get into their first team and in March 1926 was offloaded to Tranmere Rovers. At Tranmere he enjoyed the best spell of his career, returning 24 goals in 1927-28 and plundering an impressive 74 goals in 137 games over 5 seasons before a move to non league Workington in 1930.
