Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire born left back Bill Cartwright began his football career with Trent Rovers in 1905 before joining Second Division Gainsborough Trinity in 1906, making his Football League debut against Blackpool in September 1906. He was an ever present in 1907-08 before being signed by First Division Chelsea in the summer of 1908 after 5 goals (four of which were penalties) in 66 appearances for Gainsborough.

At Chelsea he played 26 times during their 1909-10 relegation season, before spending three more seasons on the first team fringe, making 46 appearances in total before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 1913. He made 15 appearances for Spurs during 1913-14 before joining Southern League club Swansea Town, playing for Swansea both sides of the First World War, and also for Gillingham in 1919. He then retired from playing and went into coaching, where he worked for Southend United for a number of years.
