Herrington, County Durham born wing half Ernest Carter played for Ashington in 1920 (while still a North Eastern League club) before joining Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 1921, making his Football League debut against Barnsley that September. He made 10 appearances during 1921-22 but only 6 more appearances the following season as Wolves were relegated, and played his final match for Wolves at Hartlepools United in February 1924, before finishing his professional football career.
