Newton-Le-Willows born goalkeeper Tommy Capper had been with South Liverpool before the outbreak of World War One, and had guested for Liverpool during the War, but moved to Scotland to play for Dundee in 1919 before joining Southend United in the summer of 1920, making his Football League debut against Brighton & Hove Albion in Southend’s inaugural League match. He played 84 matches for The Shrimpers over their first 2 League seasons, but he lost his place in the summer of 1922 and didn’t play again before a move back to Lancashire with Wigan Borough in February 1923. He made only 5 appearances for Wigan before going non league with Wallasey United that summer.
