Born in Wessington, Derbyshire, wing half Charlie Calladine started his football career with junior club Ivanhoe in 1927 before joining Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1928, moving to Birmingham in 1930, for whom he made his Football League debut at Huddersfield Town in April 1931 and played 126 games scoring 5 goals over 6 seasons. He was a physically strong player with pace and a powerful shot. He transferred from Birmingham in February 1936 signing for Blackburn Rovers although he couldn’t prevent their relegation two months later, for whom he scored 7 goals in 49 appearances before joining Guildford City in 1937, whom he helped to runners-up spot in the Southern League.
