Description

Wombwell, Yorkshire born outside right Stan Burton joined Third Division (North) club Doncaster Rovers from junior club Thurnscoe Victoria in 1932 making his Football League debut against Halifax Town in March 1933. He scored 12 goals in their 1934-35 campaign that saw Rovers win the Third Division (North) Championship, and the following season he scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 win at Hull City on 19th October 1935. Although they were relegated two seasons later, Burton scored 54 goals in 204 games for Donny over six years before joining First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1938.

He played for Wolves in the 1939 FA Cup Final at Wembley when they surprisingly lost 4-1 to Portsmouth, and only five days later, after less than a single season with Wolves he joined Second Division West Ham United in May 1939 having scored 4 goals in 32 appearances in old gold and black, making his Hammers debut against Manchester City on the last day of the season.

However he only played 3 more matches for West Ham at the start of the 1939-40 season before peacetime football was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, and during the War he guested for Barnsley, Leeds United, Chesterfield, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City. After the War he joined Midland League club Frickley Colliery in 1946, moving to Peterborough United in 1947 for a single season before joining Wombwell Athletic in 1948, his final club before his eventual retirement.
