Welby, Leicestershire born inside forward Frank Burton joined Nottingham Forest in 1897 and spent 1897-98 at The City Ground without making a first team appearance before signing for Second Division Burton Swifts in July 1898 making his Football League debut against Blackpool that September. He was the club’s top scorer with 14 goals in 1900-01. When Swifts merged with Burton Wanderers to form Burton United in 1901 he continued with the new team for another season, before joining non league Horninglow Village in 1902, moving to Gresley Rovers in 1903. He returned to Burton United for the 1905-06 season, scoring once in 15 appearances, so bringing his total goal tally to 30 in 131 appearances for the combined Swifts and United teams. He moved to non league Byrkley in 1906 before retirement.
