Shettleston, Glasgow born left back Sam Brown began his football career with Rutherglen Glencairn in 1921, and joined Scottish League Third Lanark in 1922. After a spell on loan with King’s Park early in his Warriors’ career, he spent seven years at Cathkin Park, also going on loan to East Stirlingshire in 1928. He left Third Lanark to join Third Division (South) Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in May 1929 and made his Football League debut at Coventry City the same September, featuring regularly for The Cherries for two seasons, making 65 appearances.
In May 1931 he joined Brighton & Hove Albion but struggled to get into the first team, making only 4 appearances during the 1931-32 season before a move to Chester in September 1932, where he never made their first eleven in a two month spell before he joined Swindon Town in November. He managed just two appearances for The Robins in November 1932, before returning to Scotland to play for Stranraer the following year.
