Whitton Park, County Durham born George Brown began his football career with Cockfield in 1932 and joined Third Division (North) club Hartlepools United in 1933, making his Football League debut at Crewe Alexandra that December. He made 12 appearances during his debut season and 22 in 1934-35, but his most productive season was in 1935-36 when he played 28 matches during The Monkey Hangers’ campaign, which ended with a sixth place League finish. However after 62 appearances he joined Halifax Town in the 1936 close season, having a single season at The Shay making 11 appearances for Halifax, before joining Northern League club Spennymoor United in the summer of 1937.
