Stairfoot, Barnsley, Yorkshire born outside left Joe Brooks began his football career playing for Ardsley Nelson and joined Second Division Barnsley in 1904, making his Football League debut against Leicester Fosse that December, scoring once in 8 appearances in his debut season and remaining an occasional performer before establishing himself in the first eleven in April 1906. The following season he played 30 matches including 5 FA Cup ties before Barnsley were eliminated by Woolwich Arsenal in the Fourth Round, having accounted for First Division Bury in the Third Round.
West Bromwich Albion bought Brooks after 7 goals in 49 appearances in the 1907 close season and he had a single season at The Hawthorns, scoring once in 22 appearances before returning to Barnsley a year later, however he only made 5 more appearances in their 1908-09 campaign before joining Midland League club Rotherham County in 1909.
