Ebbw Vale born centre forward Joe Brain started his football career with hometown club Ebbw Vale in 1929 and spent a season at Sunderland in 1930-31 having joined them in March 1930 without appearing for The Black Cats, before joining Norwich City in May 1931, making his Football League debut at Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1931. He scored 5 goals in 13 appearances that season before joining Barrow in August 1932 where he was the club’s top scorer in 1932-33 with 17 goals in 30 appearances, leading Preston North End to buy him at the start of April 1933, Brain scoring 2 goals in 7 appearances as Preston were promoted as runners up in the Second Division. Brain didn’t stay at Deepdale, moving to Swansea Town in July 1933, and playing 3 seasons in South Wales, scoring 26 goals in 52 appearances. He moved to Bristol City in June 1937 where he scored 13 goals in 40 appearances over the next 2 seasons before retiring in 1939.
