Description

Glasgow born outside right Jimmy Boyd came to Newcastle United’s attention playing in Glasgow junior football. Having began his football career with Petershill Juniors in 1923 he joined St Bernard’s in 1924 and signed for The Magpies in May 1925, making his Football League team debut at Cardiff City in September 1926, but he played only once more that season as Newcastle won the League Championship. He would stay on Tyneside for exactly 10 years during which time he won the FA Cup with them in 1932 when they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley, scoring a career best 23 goals that season which saw him top Newcastle’s goalscoring list, and he was awarded his only Scotland international cap when he played in a 2-1 defeat to Ireland at Celtic Park in September 1933.

After 64 goals in 215 appearances he was sold to Derby County for £1,000 in May 1935  but only made 9 appearances for The Rams scoring once, before joining Bury for a brief spell in January 1937 where he scored twice in 10 appearances. He joined Dundee in the summer of 1937 and after a season with The Dark Blues returned to Division One with Grimsby Town in June 1938, where he played his final 45 games back in black & white stripes, scoring 10 goals before retiring with the onset of the Second World War.

He later scouted for Scottish players for both Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

Note he is shown in Newcastle strip in the photograph, although he had just transferred to Derby County.
