Description

Stourbridge, Staffordshire born left half Alf Bishop had been an England Junior international against Scotland while playing with Birmingham & District League club Halesowen Town, from where he joined Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers in June 1906, making his Football League debut against Hull City that September. He soon established a regular berth in their first eleven and was ever present in his debut season. The following season Bishop played all 7 FA Cup ties as Wolves won the 1908 FA Cup Final, causing a shock in beating Newcastle United 3-1 in the Final at The Crystal Palace.

He was a regular first choice player throughout his Molineux career, playing at left half, right half and centre half, and until the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, Bishop missed only 16 matches in nine seasons, being ever present in four of them, having become club captain in 1911.

Bishop played both sides of the First World War, making over 30 appearances in 1919-20 for the tenth consecutive season, before joining Birmingham and District League club Wrexham in 1920 having scored 6 times  for Wolves in 382 appearances over 14 years at Molineux. By the time Wrexham joined the Football League a year later Bishop had finished his player career, retiring due to injury in 1921.
