English born centre forward Billy Ball began his senior football career with Southern League club Swansea Town, he played as an amateur for Swansea Town so that he could also play rugby for Swansea Rugby Club. He scored 27 goals in 57 appearances in the Southern League either side of the First World War (which substantially interrupted his career) between 1912 and 1920, but when Swansea joined the Football League in 1920 Ball retired.
Ball scored the first professional goal for Swansea in their 1-1 draw with Cardiff on 7th September 1912, The Swans’ first professional game, also scoring their first hat-trick, against Aberdare Athletic in December 1912, also scoring Welsh Cup hat-tricks in their first season against Milford in October 1912 and against Cardiff City in the semi final in February 1913 as Swansea went on to win the Welsh Cup with a 1-0 replay win over Pontypridd in April 1913. In the 1912-13 campaign he was The Swans’ leading goalscorer with 19 goals in 26 League and Cup appearances. He was also the first player to be sent off for Swansea Town in a match.
