Description

Swindon, Wiltshire born wing half Archie “Bob” Archer was an England schoolboy international whose career had started with Swindon Rovers in 1914. He signed for hometown Southern League club Swindon Town in 1915 but the First World War interrupted his career and he played 3 times for Swindon as a wartime guest in 1915-16 before joining Bristol Rovers after the end of the conflict in 1919.

In October 1920 he returned to Swindon Town, by now in their inaugural season in the Third Division (South), making his Football League debut at Northampton Town in March 1921, although he spent the first five seasons of his second spell at The County Ground on the periphery of the first eleven, not earning a regular place in The Robins’ starting line up until September 1925, after which he was a mainstay until a heavy FA Cup defeat at Manchester City in January 1930. He made 5 appearances in the remainder of the season and only 11 more appearances in 1930-31 before he retired in the summer of 1931, having scored 4 goals in 208 appearances for Swindon Town.
