Middlesbrough born centre half Walter Ainsworth began his football career with South Bank in 1935 and spent 1936-37 on the books of First Division Sheffield Wednesday, without making a first team appearance. He joined Third Division (North) Lincoln City in 1937 and made his only first team appearance in a heavy Third Division Cup defeat at Doncaster Rovers in October the same year, before joining non league Cheltenham Town in 1938. He spent 1938-39 on the books at Plymouth Argyle without making a first team appearance, and the advent of the Second World War finished his senior career.
