Manchester born inside forward Alf Ainsworth signed for Second Division Manchester United in February 1934 from Ashton Athletic making his Football League debut against Bury the following month, and playing once more against Fulham before joining non league Great Harwood. He returned to League football signing for New Brighton in February 1935 playing for the club both sides of World War Two and scoring 53 goals in 206 appearances before joining Congleton Town in 1947. He subsequently played for Ashton Town in 1948.
